This beautiful - and apparently tiny - red wedge of fury came about in 1971 as Ferrari responded to changing Sports Car regulations. They wrapped a version of their 312B Formula 1 flat-12 boxer engine in a new prototype chassis, called the 312P ”B” to differentiate from its 3-liter V12-powered 312P predecessor.

The effort got off to a bit of a rough start but aero, mechanical, and driver updates into 1972 and 1973 saw the 312PB winning races and winning championships. Despite these successes, after the 1973 season the Scuderia shifted focus to Formula 1 leaving the 312PB as the last of Ferrari’s factory sports prototypes until the 333SP two decades later.

1972 car had an open nose intake, a single roll-hoop hump for the driver's head rest. 1973 brought updated bodywork with a wide front splitter, no nose intake, and roll-hoop fairings with two tall intakes.
